4 street racers arrested in latest Portland crackdown, police say

Portland police arrested four drivers Sunday as part of their latest crackdown on street racing.

Racers Kevin Garcia, Jaren Jacobsen and Mystar Russell were arrested on suspicion of reckless driving and reckless endangering, according to Portland police.

A 17-year-old boy was also arrested on suspicion of reckless driving. Latest Portland News Jacobsen is accused of criminally driving with a suspended license, as well.

The arrests come as racers take advantage of reduced traffic amid the coronavirus pandemic, as well as warmer weather.

They also come a week after police were called to the Fremont Bridge on reports of dozens of racers blocking southbound traffic and spinning cars in donuts across the span.

Police last week announced plans to partner with other law enforcement agencies to try to curb such racing and stunting.



Their Sunday night effort in North and Northeast Portland resulted in 12 traffic stops and twice as many citations — both for street racing and other illegal driving, police said. Three cars were also towed during the directed patrol.

Street racing has long been a problem in the Portland area, with events occasionally drawing as many as 1,000 spectators Press Release Distribution Service. Race participants have been known to block freeways and urban arterials like Marine Drive.

The news outlet generally doesn’t identify juveniles accused of crimes unless they’re tried as adults or face Measure 11 charges.
